Selection, Installation, and Maintenance of Ironing Felts: Common Questions & Answers

Many customers face confusion when selecting and installing ironing felts. Here are the answers to the most common questions:

1. How do I choose the right material for the ironing felt?

Material choice depends on the working temperature of your ironing machine.

Steam heating (Low temperature: 120°C to 160°C) → Choose 100% Polyester.
Electric or Oil heating (Medium temperature: 180°C to 190°C) → Choose 50% Aramid / 50% Polyester.
Gas/Fuel heating (High temperature: Above 200°C) → Choose 100% Aramid.

2. How do I calculate the width and length of the ironing felt ?

One-turn wrap felt (Thick needled felts): The felt width should be exactly the same as the roller width.

Two-turn or Three-turn wrap felt: The felt width should be the roller width plus an extra 300 mm.

For both types, the felt length is calculated based on the roller diameter. If you share the diameter with a professional, they can calculate the exact length for you.

3. Can I just wrap the felt around the roller to finish the installation ?

No, this is completely wrong! We have seen customers do this, and it caused severe damage to their machines.
If your ironing machine has metal fixing plates on both ends of the roller: You must fix both sides of the felt securely to these plates.

If there are no fixing plates: The felt must have sewn with rope on both edges so you can pull and tie them tight to fix the felt in place.

4. Which side of the felt is the working side (the side facing the linen) ?

For 100% Polyester felts: The rougher side is the working side.

For 50% Aramid or 100% Aramid felts: The smoother side is the working side.

5. How should do the daily maintain the ironing felt ?

Avoid harsh chemicals Do not wash your linens with highly acidic or highly alkaline detergents. Residual chemicals will transfer onto the felt during ironing, speeding up fiber aging and damage, which heavily shortens the felt's lifespan.

Keep it dry Keep the felt dry during daily use and avoid damp or humid environments.

Clean off extra wax immediately Always clean up residual wax in time. Leftover wax blocks the pores of the felt fibers, reducing its breathability. Over time, this will cause serious damage to the felt.
